Sensors Help Keep the Elderly Safe

Read the article and give your summary of what it's all about.

What innovative creations do you think we can make using sensors and the NXT Brick for the coming season?

  1. We're going to have to use a lot of ultrasonic sensor or just use it as a scanner!

  2. This is a good idea but how? What shall we create?

    1. Like something in the sort of the sensors that the article mentions, they help the seniors stay independant.

    2. Ultrasonic sensors might be useful for seniors with visual impairments.

  3. We should use a security system that is cheap and calls 911 automatically if they are not ok,Darius

    1. Sounds like a free cellular service that keeps track of seniors

  4. How could we use the NXT to create an alarm system? What sensors should we use? Would there be some sort of motor action triggered by the tripping of the alarm?

  5. The article was about elderly people using mechanisms that other elderly people have invented or thought up. It also described stories that have "actually" happened to people. It also showed how the methods and technology affected the people.
Also my idea for a technology that can help the elderly is a smart moving wheelchair thatthat can be converted into a bed, has GPS, and can call for first aid when the person in the wheelchair has not moved for an extended period of time but can be turned off by a password only known by the owner (incase they need to use the bathroom or sleep in another bed. it also may not cost little but will be priced reasonably.

    1. Perhaps the password would be better some sort of hand print recognition instead of having to type.

  6. This article talked about new technologies that help the elderly stay safe. These new technologies include many sensors. Many of these technologies help the elderly stay independent while still staying safe. For example, one thing that was made was a sensor that saw if the elderly were in the right place. For example, if the person was not in their bed at night time, someone would call the house and if know one picked up the police would come to the house.

    1. Could we develop a robot that senses motion and reacts if there is no motion? Instead of a burglar alarm that looks for unwanted motion it'd be a senior alarm that looks for lack of motion. How could we build that?

  7. The article is mostly about this program for seniors were they have beepers to keep the seniors safe and to help them. Sadly the beeper failed alot so they tried to upgade it each time it failed.

    1. If it was so unsuccessful, how could you make it better with NXT or perhaps even using more advanced electronics such as the Parallax Basic Stamp or an Arduino microcontroller?

  8. The article is about a sensor that a a senior had and it failed,so thet are to fix it,for seniors

    1. Did it fail? What failed? It sounded like there were a few examples of sensors and how they really helped out.

  9. what about a robot dog, like the one the blind have.so the dog will look after the senior and take care of the senior and if the senior needs emergency help the dog will either go for help or the dog will have a button that the senior will press

    1. What will the senior have to press? If the senior is having an emergency will he/she be able to press anything? Wouldn't it be better if the cyber-dog helper could sense the problems and communicate them directly for the senior?

  10. the article is about a program for seniors were they help like if you fall and no ones in your house with you the sensors will help you and keep you safe :)

  11. OK we should have like an animal of the persons choice and the animal has sensors were they hear a sound any sound and come running in the room but they should also have sensors were they detect how far away the body is and can detect if a wall, object or person is near :)

    1. This sounds like a see-eye-animal, just like a seeing-eye dog. It's an interesting idea because a companion animal will always sense when something is wrong, stay with the senior and, if it's robotic then it can notify the proper people or organizations quickly.

  12. In this article, the author speaks about new technology that helps the elderly at home. For example, Bertha Branch, 78, uses “eneighbor “to notify 911 if she falls and can’t get up by herself with wireless technology. Also, Philip Marshall, 85, another Meridian Health patient, uses a system tied to his cellphone to help him remember his medications. These technical “nurses” are currently helping seniors around the nation keep up with themselves at home, from medications to falling on the floor with no help. In conclusion, these machines were greatly planned for the elderly and are available at their earliest needs.
Brainstorm: Ultrasonic sensor to guide minifigure through red light as if crossing street.
